EV vs Gas Cost
Gas $/mi = Price ÷ MPG • EV $/mi = Electricity Price ÷ mi-per-kWh • Fuel/energy only.
Both drivetrains reduce to one honest number — energy cost per mile. For gas: price per gallon ÷ MPG. For electric: price per kWh ÷ miles per kWh (most EVs manage roughly 3–4 mi/kWh). Multiply by your yearly miles for the yearly picture.
A 30 MPG car on $3.60 gas pays $0.120 per mile. An EV doing 3.4 mi/kWh on $0.16 electricity pays $0.047 per mile — about 61% less. Over 12,000 miles a year that is $1,440.00 vs $564.71: an $875.29 yearly saving on energy alone.
Purchase price, insurance, maintenance (usually lower for EVs: no oil, fewer moving parts), tires, home-charger installation and public fast-charging prices (often 2–3× home electricity rates) all move the real answer. This tool isolates the energy cost per mile — the figure that repeats every single day you drive. For the gas side in depth, use our cost per mile calculator.
Most modern EVs achieve 3–4 miles per kWh in mixed driving; large electric trucks and SUVs sit nearer 2–2.5, small efficient models can exceed 4. Cold weather can cut it by 20–30%.
Electricity and gas prices vary independently by state. Cheap electricity with expensive gas makes an EV a clear win; the reverse narrows the gap. Always run your local prices.
Only if you enter its price. Fast chargers often charge $0.40–0.60 per kWh — enter the price you actually pay most often, home or public.
