Your fuel cost per mile is the price of a gallon spread over the miles that gallon carries you: Cost Per Mile = Gas Price ÷ MPG. Multiply by your monthly miles to budget a month, and by 12 for a year.
Gas at $3.60 and a car doing 30 MPG: $3.60 ÷ 30 = $0.12 per mile. That is $12.00 every 100 miles. Drive 1,200 miles a month and fuel alone costs $144.00 a month — $1,728.00 a year.
Fuel is only part of what a mile costs. Tires, oil, maintenance, insurance and depreciation typically add several times the fuel figure — official standard mileage rates (set yearly by the IRS in the US) exist precisely to capture that full cost for business driving. At $3.50 a gallon: a 20 MPG vehicle pays $0.175/mile, a 30 MPG car $0.117, and a 45 MPG hybrid about $0.078. Small MPG gains matter most at the low end.
Raise MPG (tire pressure, gentler acceleration, less roof cargo, steady 45–55 mph cruising) or lower the price you pay (fill up away from highway service areas). The math rewards both equally.
No. The IRS rate is a full-cost allowance including depreciation, insurance and maintenance. Your fuel-only cost per mile will always be much lower.
